Watch the playlist: Vinay Lal - Moral & Political Thought of Gandhi, Lectures 19 https://rutube.ru/plst/1583914 University of California, Los Angeles. Gandhi's deployment of fasting at Ahmedabad; his use of the fast on subsequent occasions; fasting and the emptying of the body and of the self; fasting as coercion; fasting and suffering; political versus ritual fasting; women and fasting; fasting and cleansing; and Gandhi's feminization of Indian politics. Around 28-29 minutes into the lecture, I then move on to sketch politics in British India from 1918 to the early 1920s: Rowlatt Committee report, demand for self-determination, Rowlatt Satyagraha, the Punjab Disturbances and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, and the response of Gandhi to this repression. What is Gandhi's distinction between nonviolence of the weak and nonviolence of the strong? Around 50 minutes into the lecture, we begin considering Gandhi's pamphlet, "Hind Swaraj", published in 1908-9. What is Gandhi's critique of modernity? Why does he criticize railways, lawyers, and doctors? Gandhi's relationship to the railways & similarly his relationship to the masses. Gandhi's critique of 'speed'; speed and modernity. Vinay Lal is an Indian historian. He is a professor of history and Asian American studies at UCLA. He writes widely on the history and culture of colonial and modern India, popular and public culture in India, cinema, historiography, the politics of world history, the Indian diaspora, global politics, contemporary American politics, the life and thought of Mohandas Gandhi, Hinduism, and the politics of knowledge systems.
